Mica plays a major role in the making of an Intaglio printing in illustrations of scientific research. In order to create an intaglio image, a printmaker incises lines directly into the surface of a plate using a machine called burin.

Normally, mica is floated using small petri dishes or drops on Parafilm in order to float carbon films. These methods, however, don’t allow the necessary angle tilt required to let carbon. Thus, a completely innovative etching block was designed that has a mica slot ramped. This block can be utilized along with the floatation buffer exchange to precisely set the position of the mica slots.
